Case study on what makes a successful ensemble
This case study is about showing what i think is a good ensemble and how it is a good ensemble. For this case study i will be using the band The 1975 and through this case study i will be showing all the elements i think a band should have to become a successful ensemble.
The 1975 are an English, Manchester-based alternative rock/indie band from cheshire. The group consists of Matthew Healy who is main vocals and rhythm guitar, Adam Hann who plays the lead guitar, George Daniel who is on drums and lead backing vocal, and Ross MacDonald who plays bass. - Music For Cars
- IV

Choosing The Right People For The Band
Matthew Healy, Adam Hann Ross MacDonald, and
George Daniel met at Wilmslow High School as teenagers and began playing music
in 2002.
An Interview from Gigwise to Matt Healy had this to say: "There
was this idealistic hippy council worker who started to put on these gigs for
kids, to form bands. I remember the guitarist Adam Hann came up to me and said
he wanted to play one of these shows. We started playing, doing covers of punk
songs and pop songs and just started out doing that. Then once we eventually
wrote a song, I decided, well, this is a lot better than going to work - or
going to school, for that matter. We started from then and we've been making
music together since we were about 15 - George was 14, actually, when we
started,"
After Adam Hann invited the members to form a band, they started playing covers of different punk rock songs and pop songs in a local club. Originally Matt Healy was the drummer, but took over vocals after the original singer left to start another band. George Daniel was recruited as the new drummer to complete the final line-up. The members were all friends before hand and so connected well with each other and splayed well with each other. That is one of the reasons why they were
such a successful ensemble.

Having Good Chemistry With Band Mates
The band have been paying for around 10 years now which means they have a lot of chemistry and gel together really well. With so much compassion and motivation the band after a long period made the charts. This is a classic example to show what a good ensemble should have. As a four piece since school, they have been working together none stop, as best friends, and work partners in the job of making their own music and producing it. They are all very similar and all have the same variety of taste in music, this means song writing is much more easier, from just writing lyrics on a piece of paper to performing the song as an ensemble.
Having been playing for around 10 years it deffinetly benifitted them as an ensemble and as song writters, Originally the band had wrote the actual The 1975 albulm before all their actual EPs. Their EP were just short stages of their lives and short statements they wanted to put out to the public, and when they released their debut album it was basically a story. The story that happened within those 10 years of playing together. This was helped by the fact they all had history together, some top of the chart bands only play for around 2-3 years and have no history, their songs may be well written, but the words may not neccisery apply to them or events that have happened. The 1975 album was pretty much back to back story telling on what had happened, different events that occured, even if it wasnt about them. Songs like chocolate and sex didnt apply to the band members of the 1975, but as Matt Healey had said, the songs wernt necciserily about them, but in the general public, on the was the youths have lived and what events may be occuring to young teenaged kids.

Gaining A Fan Base
The 1975 didn't just release one hit single and then suddenly became huge, they built up their fan base for a long time and recorded many Eps in a build up to fame and success as they release their debut album. I think this made them a more successful ensemble because it enabled them to have a massive fan base and have a very personal feel for the crowd rather then someone like Justin Bieber who got famous in a day. This also meant that their sound changed in prospective of what the crowd liked. If they saw someone walk out during a song they would take it out their set because it wasn't good enough for people to stay and listen too. This also meant that they could practice being with a crowd more often, they could build up they confidence and be more fluid on stage. The 1975 throughout their EP writting have been producing their EPs within Matt Healys bedroom, they recorded, mixed and then sent the EP off to be mastered.
The idea was simply not because they didnt have enough money, but because they
wanted to make their own EP tracks which were not modified from anyone who wasnt
in the band. No one knew how The 1975 sounded and so sending of the song to me
mixed or even mixing it at a studio, could have changed the whole feel of the
tracks. The 1975 brought out their EPs and ever since their first but single
'The City' labels came flying at them and gigs were starting to occur a lot more
often. The EP Facedown was known to be the first EP and their start to success. Since then the sound of them became more in tune to the croud and people then knew how they wanted to sound. The 1975 carried on recording in Matt Healys bedroom till they recorded their actual album.

Creating An Iconic Image
Having previously performed and released material under different names such as Talkhouse, The Slowdown, Bigsleep, and Drive Like I Do, the band eventually settled on the name The 1975. Healy says that the name was inspired by scribblings found in the back page of an old Beat poetry book dated "1 June, The 1975".
The interview with the 1975 explaining how they were found and who they are:
I feel that the name for the band also helps them become a succesful ensemble. The name is gramatiically wrong but sticks to peoples head, people can remember the name and so the name may spread and stick. It differenciates them from all the other bands aswell. The market is drawn into them because they see something different.
I also think that their image is very important. They have a very distinctive style and image that portrays them. This includes dress codes whcih onlyh contains black and white and is very plain. Most of their videos are also in black and white. This made them a successful ensemble because they were different. Not many bands focused on image as much as them and so using their image differinciated them from other bands. Its very different to images from bands and so the audience are drawn in to different.

Shared Pholosophy
The band originally formed around 10 years, but they never expected to become as huge as they are now.
I feel one of the reasons why they are such a successful ensemble is because they didnt try to become big and famouse, and instead focused on the actual musicality of the band. This made them very unique and also enabled them to develop their songs to a massive extent. After a while they started to get a following and when they played gigs, people really liked them. From this they actually started to think about getting bigger and making a career out of being a band. Doing something they love doing, rather then trying to hard to become big was defenetly a huge part to their success.

Unique Style
Many people such as critics from a variety of magazines compare the 1975 to The Big Pink. The Sex EP which was their second EP release was described by Paste as "equal parts ethereal and synth pop", with "haunting" and "smooth" vocals. Their "mellow", stripped down style was praised for its lack of "attention-grabbing production theatrics". The band as a whole have been influenced by diverse genres including electro pop, electronic music, guitar pop, and RnB. Matt Healy (Lead singer) said that his influences were:
The style of the 1975 one definatly one of the key elements to making them more of a successful ensemble.
The 1975's sound was very distinctive because not many bands make that kind of music. The 1975 had a very popy vibe along with 70s guitar tones and licks. The 1975 also varied in different sounds from grunge to happy pop. Doing this meant that they could appeal from a larger variety of different people from all different kind of backgrounds and liking to genres.
The 1975 also have a very distinctive element which inludes having a backing track in their live performance. This helped them because a very successful ensemble becase not only was their sound a lot more full live, but it differinciated them from all the modern bands that you hear now days.
Unique Influences
Talking Heads
Prince
My Bloody Valantine
Micheal Jackson
Peter Gabriel
Brian Eno
D'angelo
Sigur Ros
The 1975 have a variety of different influences which means they can create a variety of different sounds and elements within a song which makes them so unique. Having a unique style and sound draws and audience and a crowd because they like hearing new things. This was also another reason why the 1975 became so huge.
This Vidie shows and example of how they play live, how they connect, and how they sound. This demonstrates what a good, well rehearsed, and tight ensemble should be like at a show like this.

How The 1975 Rehearse Now
As The 1975 have been playing for around 10 years, they are tight on their
performances. As shown in this video it is very difficult to find a fault in
their performance. The band have gelled together in the last few years and have
had many constant gigs which has also helped them to improve. Recently the band
have been playing gig night after night, recently they have played in the same
O2 academy brixton 3 nights in a row. From doing so many gigs together they can
use this to improve. I saw them on the friday and then the saturday at Brixton
and the saturday night was deffinetly better, they performance was tighter and
the band themselves seemed a lot more relaxed on stage. The 1975 have had hardly
any time to relax, not even time to rehearse, so currently at the moment the
band use the actual gig as rehearsals. From one of the interviews Matt Healy
said "Me and the boys havnt been home in around 8 months, we hardly get a day
off and even if we do, it normally consists of just washing up all our cloths.
We have no actual time to relax, we are up from 9 in the morning heading off to
the gig, doing soundcheck, and doing the gig, we then either if we are lucky get
to go to sleep and leave at 4 in the morning to go to tokyo or something, but
normally we would fly that night, so its pretty hecktic. We havnt had a
rehearsal in a very long time, and to be honest, doing the actual gigs benifits
us as a band a lot more because its real, we have a croud and we are live where
as in a rehearsal we are more relaxed and we and as concious to make a mistake.
its not real." The band recently have had no time to spare. This in an interview
of them getting asked questions from the general public:
Rehearsing
Even though now days the 1975 have no time for reheasing, rehearsals were still a major concept into becoming a successful ensemble. Its crucial because this is where most of their songs are writtened and practiced to a live performance standard.
The 1975 used to rehearse within Matt Healeys bedroom and so were in a very inclosed area. One of the main ways they practiced was just song run throughs. They would run through a song a certain amount of times and impove each time. Throughout the song they would pick out what needs to be a lot better and what needs to be imporoved. They would then run through those parts until they were happy. They would do this for every song till they were confident and were convinced that it was polished. This way of reheasing is used by many bands including ours where we run through and practice each part.
I feel that diong all this rehearsing enabled them to become a much better ensemble. Playing together and getting tighter as a band helped them develop their live shows and so they could pwerform at theur best each time. Performing well helped them because the croud would remember them as being a really well played band. They were able to play really well each performance.
Rehearsals are also where most songs were made. George would play a drum beat and the band would play ontop of eachother. This type of writting is easily heard in their song 'The City'. In that song you can see the drummer playing that drum beat and everyone would come in to creat a song.
This type of writting i feel helped them become a better ensemble because they wrote the song as they would play it live, rather then doing it acoustically and just writting a band version of it. Writting it as a full band enabled them to be really tight throught the song and as a result would make the song sound really slick in the live shows.

Online Marketing
Social media websites such as facebook and twitter have been on of the main reasons for thei success. Websites like facebook enabled them to gather a good following online so that people around the world could see what they were doing. They were able to put status' up telling everyone where their gig was and when. Facebook is so huge that most people around the world use it, so to have that, its easier to get into contact with new followers and fans. Social media also helped promoste The 1975 a lot. There are advertisement posters on the side coloms which enable bands or business to have advertisement, which from were able to get a good following and helped promote them to the world so that everyone could know who they were.
Youtube was also one of the main reasons the 1975 became big becasue they were able to put their song on it for free and so everyone around the world could listen to it for free how ever many times they would like. From this people would then show others about the 1975 and the word of Thw 1975 would spread increasing their following and their fan base.

Good Equipement Management
Matt Healy - Guitar (fender mustang is the one usually people see him using).
Matt also uses different guitar pedals such as distortion and flanger, but besides his guitar, he also uses a korg banded synth. Songs such as the city have a main synth line. This use of his equipment is so that itMatty can create a variety of different styles as a front man. Not only does he just use poppy guitar riffs but he uses driven synth leads in songs such as The City and this names the song a lot more different from other songs and so draws in an audience to seeing something different.
Adam Hann - Electric Guitar. Usually fender although he was seen playing an epiphone in the glastonbury concert. He also has a midi synth which is connected to his laptop controlling different synth effects used in a variety of different songs. Adam also has a large variety of different guitar pedals such as an echo, distortion, and reverb. Adam uses these pedals to create a wide range of different guitar tones. He uses a lot of ambient pedals such as the Terror Echo which sort of gives his guitar tone a synth texture which not many guitarists use and so creates variety. It also makes the 1975s sound a lot more ambient and reverie as if they were playing in an empty tunnel which is what their sound in generated by.
Ross Mcdonald - Electric Bass Guitar. He also uses a finger sensitive pad to trigger different synth sounds known as the kord finger pad. A variety of pedals such as distortion, and volume and a mic. He is lower in the mix along with Adam Hann. Not only does ross use his bass but his finger pad
is used a lot on a various amount of songs. It consists of loops and
different sound effects to make a poppy feel to the band. This
enables the band to channel through a variety of different sounds in
their music and rather being a typical rock band, they genres can change
even just though using sound effects.
George Daniel - Uses a full drum kit with out one of the high toms. He
also has a midi synth connected to his laptop or creat different sound effects
as well as pads to trigger different effects and loops. George is the main
backing vocalist and so Will have a mic next to his drums so he can sing
through. George uses his pad a lot as well as Ross an often both use them at
the same time. George uses hit to also give a really poppy vibe to the band
and as well as hard hitting drums to get that driving tone of that band he uses
synth pads triggering different sounds. This help give the band an ambient and
poppy jumpy sound and changes their genre completely. Georges snare is also
tuned very low to make his kit sound fat and reverie which is the sort of sound
the 1975 are looking for as well as ambience.
The 1975 have a backing track to when they play live, this helps
fill, and makes the sound a lot more full. This usually consists of loops used
in chocolate, settle down and sex. The synth sounds are tipical loops you may
hear in pop songs or soundtracks from movies in the 80s. This makes the effect
of the music a lot more different to the modern genre such as RnB and
Alternative punk. This also enables them to explore different ideas within their
music and channels them through different sound effects. This may include
gang vocals or synth textures to give a full effect to the band playing live
and to me who has seen them 3 times thinks it does make a different and makes
the whole band sound a lot more full and driven.

Conclusion
overall i think that the main reasons why The 975 make such a successfull ensemble are Image, Style, Aspects of performance.
I think this because the 1975 have a very distinctive image. Not many bands look the same and as soon as you saw them, you would recognise them due to them being a very distinctive band and having such a distinctive image. The fact they use black and white differinciates them from many bands and so draw in more of the croud do to them being different from other bands and different is what most people like.
Their style was a main reason because they have a very distinctive style. Having a style such as theirs enabled them to become a more successful ensemble because they differinciated from other styles of music. They were able to draw in so many different people with different liking of genres purly because they had such a variety of style. But within that syle they still had the elements such as synth in the background which differinciated them to other music.
Aspects to their performance such as the backing tracks and stage precents is another reason i feel made them so successful. Their performances live is one of the best performances in the world. Having such a spectacular live performance enabled them to draw a croud and gave them a larger following. They are very slick in every performance whch made them so successful as an ensemble.
